The Hobbit Tarot: Review

The Hobbit Tarot
Terry Donaldson
Art by: Peter Pracowink
ISBN: 978-1-57281-677-0

A mystical journey…the path of the Hobbit…and adventure in story telling with Tarot.

This deck will appeal to those who love the tales of Bilbo Baggins. Based on the Rider Waite Tarot System, it has 78 cards and a small book that’s a cut above a LWB-having a color cover and black and white print inside.  There are no card images in the book.  The box is the standard kind and the size of each card is 2.27x4.75.
I was impressed with the deep colors in the art, and the ability to convey a sense of being in a different “realm”.  The cards begin with the Fool and this is Bilbo on his journey, each card is a continuation of his journey-like the “Fools Journey” he encounters many challenges-and rewards.  If you’re unfamiliar with “The Hobbit” from JR Tolkein, you may not feel the connection to each card but, if you ARE familiar you will recognize how the artist has captured the feeling and echoed the circumstances of a famous Hobbits adventure.
The companion booklet has some interesting tarot information as well as a description of the scene in each card.  There are three spreads in the booklet that seem to work very well when used with this deck.  This is a true “Theme Deck” that will be loved by Tolkein fans and those who are familiar with his writing.
